OtherShore had an excellent return tour to Sarasota, Florida's Ringling Museum. It was an honor to be invited back after our first tour there in 2009 for the Ringling's International Arts Festival. This time around we were invited as part of the Ringling's "Art of Our Time" initiative and performed in the Historic Asolo Theater, a perfect fit for our two world premieres. Check our NEWS page to read our features and reviews and our MEDIA page to watch some video clips of our two new dances.
For this month, OtherShore is proud to participate in this year's Dance From The Heart to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. On March 22nd we will perform an excerpt from OtherShore's Lift (duet), choreographed by Edwaard Liang with guest dancer Sascha Radetsky (courtesy of American Ballet Theatre). The performances will take place at the Cedar Lake Theater in Chelsea. We hope you will join us in supporting this important and wonderful event. Tickets to this event sell out quickly, for more information check our SCHEDULE page or go directly to the DRA website.

OtherShore is pleased to say this has been an exciting and busy season. We are planning our February tour to Sarasota, Florida where we will premiere two new works, including our newest, The Social Band, which had its first showing last night at the Duo Theater on the Lower East Side in New York. Our time spent working with choreographer Stephen Petronio over the past six weeks has been everything we hoped for and more. Planning for this new creation with Stephen has been two years in the making and well worth it. Walking into the studio with him every day has been deeply satisfying for us on two levels. Creatively, this quintet, with powerful music by Son Lux, has drawn on each dancers' personality and skills, while incorporating Stephen's unique style. His never ending quest to make each movement memorable has lifted each of us into a higher level of our own artistry, not to mention unknown depths of bodily aches—a welcome challenge! In addition, adding this commission to OtherShore's repertoire marks a long awaited goal for the Company and we couldn't be more proud of this accomplishment.
In the next couple of months we will be back in the studio teching both The Goats by Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar and The Social Band, both will have lighting design by Jennifer Tipton...and then on to sunny Florida! We'd love to see you there and share our two new works with you at the Historic Asolo Theater at the Ringling Museum.

To Our Dear Friends and Supporters,
Thank you to everyone, near and far, for your generous support of our recent September 29th benefit performance. Working along side such talented artists was truly inspiring. Sharing the stage with Bryn Terfel and Pedja Muzijevic, getting to perform Trisha Brown's work again, and dancing our commissioned work by Jodi Melnick will not soon be forgotten. The celebrated Vogue editor and writer André Leon Talley surprised us with his attendance and wrote a wonderful article in Vogue Daily.
Our upcoming residency at the Duo Multicultural Arts Center will begin in November and we are excited and looking forward to working with choreographer Stephen Petronio and composer Ryan Lott. Please check back for updates and new postings!
Thank you for continuing to support OtherShore!
With deepest thanks,
Sonja and Brandi

May 2010:
The Company traveled to California to premiere its fifth new commission, a dance choreographed by Jodi Melnick. It was an experience that has had a significant impact on the development of the Company and its dancers and to a community in Northern California who had yet to see a live modern dance performance.
This journey began in 2008 when renowned theater director, Peter Sellars, recommended OtherShore to be the first dance company to be invited to perform at the newly built University of California, in Merced, California. Perhaps he saw a kinship between our two organizations, not in size or history, but in spirit. After a year of planning, OtherShore performed Bird, Bear, Grey Blue-Violet to faculty, students and the community on Friday, May 1, 2010 at the Lakireddy Auditorium. The piece included Brandi Norton, Sonja Kostich, Elizabeth DeMent and Aaron Mattocks. The passion that the students of UC Merced unveiled to entice the First Lady Michelle Obama to present the 2009 commencement speech was ever-present at OtherShore’s performance and the moderated discussion held afterwards. The students shared their thoughts about our performance and asked insightful questions about OtherShore’s work and objectives. It seemed that everything we had brought with us to the campus was questioned in a way that served to unify the group and clarify the company’s mission. While we thought we were simply traveling to premiere a new work, we actually found a new source of commitment to OtherShore. The experience was incredibly inspiring for each of us individually and as a company. |
